About Us

Solihull Advanced Motorists (SAM) was formed in 1986. A registered charity (no: 1054280) we are run entirely by unpaid volunteers. Our main objective is to improve road safety by improving driving standards. We are affiliated to the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) which is itself a registered charity.

We offer one to one guidance to members of the public (Associates) who have registered with the IAM for their “Skill for Life” programme, helping them to obtain the required driving standard to pass the IAM Advanced Driving Test. Together with the in-car guidance (Associates drive their own cars), five classroom based theory sessions are provided.

Guidance under the IAM’s “Drive Check” scheme is also available enabling you to have an assessment of your driving standard.

You may have been driving for many years and feel you need to update your driving skills. On the other hand you may be a newly qualified driver looking to increase your confidence and skills.

Whatever your reason we will be happy to give you the help and advice you seek.

Keith Adams
Chairman
Solihull Advanced Motorists

Some Comments Made by Our Successful Associates.

Having been successful in passing the Advanced Driving assessment I wish to express my thanks to the many people in Solihull Advanced Motorists for the help they gave me and for making the whole experience remarkably pleasant and interesting. Special thanks must go to Bruce Wilson for giving up so much of his time to guide me towards the necessary improvements. I am sure that as a result of so many people’s efforts I am now a better and more aware driver and also find that I enjoy my driving more.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved with Solihull Advanced Motorists who helped me in passing my IAM test on the 18th July 2007. Often forgotten are the people who take the Theory Courses and the background people who give up their time voluntary to help us. ‘Thank You’

Also to Richard Carney who gave up his Sunday to take my Check Drive in terrible weather. Thanks to Mick Dutton who took me for my Advanced Test.

Most of all I would like to thank my observer Bryan Powell who was very patient when I had off days and always put me at ease.

Once again to everyone many thanks.

Thanks to Sean Clarke for his time, patience, encouragement and guidance, I achieved a long held ambition by passing the test on Thursday, 14th December 2006. I am also indebted to Keith Adams for his valuable contribution on the check drive.

Thanks too, to all those beavering away in the “back office” to make SAM the success that it is. Long may it continue to thrive and prosper.

I passed my test on Saturday 2 September 2006 and would like to pass on my grateful thanks to my observer, Alan McLucas, who spent many of his Saturday mornings patiently accompanying me as I drove round the Solihull countryside! I’d also like to thank Denis Hale for his time on a check drive.

The Skill for Life package is tremendous value, thanks to the hard work & support of the volunteers.

Best Regards, Caroline Macdonald
