Preparation for the IAM Test

Many people are concerned about "The Test", knowing what it involves, and how best to prepare for it. The best way to prepare for the Test is with one of the local IAM groups. With a Group, you can prepare for the test alongside others, receiving guidance from Group members known as Observers, as well as participating in the social activities organised by those Groups. The Solihull group covers all of the Solihull area and some of surrounding area.

You don't have to go through a local IAM Group, you can contact the IAM in London direct and take the Test without any preparation if you so wish. However, we do strongly advise the Test Candidate do some preparation before taking the Test.

The IAM Test is based on the principles of driving used by the Police to train their drivers, called the "System of Car Control". The Police System is described in detail in the two books Roadcraft and Motorcycle Roadcraft available from HMSO and good bookshops.

The IAM has produced two books to help candidates prepare for the IAM Advanced Driving Test. These two books, Pass Your Advanced Driving Test and Pass Your Advanced Motorcycling Test (cover pictures below), are available from all good Bookshops or from the IAM itself. They describe in clear and easy to understand terms and pictures what is required to achieve the Advanced Driving Test standard (including a very useful section entitled "What the Examiner Looks for").
